Fernando Rubio is the Director of the Yale Center for Language Study and an Adjunct Professor of Linguistics at Yale University. Before joining Yale, he served as a Professor of Spanish Linguistics at the University of Utah.
Professor Rubio’s research interests encompass Second Language Acquisition and Teaching Methodologies. He has authored two textbooks and co-edited a volume on hybrid language teaching. He is also the co-author of “Creating Effective Blended Language Learning Courses,” published by Cambridge University Press in 2020. This work earned the prestigious Modern Language Association Kenneth W. Mildenberger Prize in 2021.
In addition to his books, Professor Rubio has published over forty articles and book chapters focusing on various aspects of second language acquisition, assessment, and technology-enhanced language teaching. He has served on the boards of several professional organizations over the past two decades, including the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and the Joint National Committee for Languages (JNCL-NCLIS). He has also been President of the National Federation of Modern Language Teachers Associations (NFMLTA) from 2021 to 2022.
Professor Rubio has received multiple professional awards. Most recently, he was honored with the 2025 ACTFL Wilga Rivers Award for Leadership in World Language Education.
Outside of his professional commitments, Professor Rubio enjoys traveling, skiing, snowboarding, and mountain biking.
