Funding
Funding for Faculty Projects
The CLS provides language faculty with financial assistance in their academic endeavors. These take the form of Instructional Innovation Workshops offering a week of hands-on training in new technologies for the classroom and Instructional Innovation Grants for ongoing projects. The Provost also provides an opportunity for language faculty to request a professional leave.
Instructional Innovation Grants (IIGs)
The CLS offers financial support to language faculty wishing to pursue projects to facilitate language learning in their classrooms. Funding will typically be made available for purchasing materials and for hiring student assistants. IIG projects are comprehensive, long-term projects that demand more extensive focus and commitment. More information, including dates and details on applications and stipends, will be announced each spring semester. In addition to providing financial and technical support for these projects, the CLS affords grantees an opportunity to present their project results during the CLS Brown Bag series. Professional Development Leaves
The Provost offers an opportunity for non-ladder faculty to seek paid, semester-long leaves to work on projects that relate directly to their teaching. For the full-time language teachers who are eligible to apply, these leaves are excellent opportunities to devote time and attention to major instructional innovation endeavors. To ensure sufficient availability of resources, faculty currently considering leaves for projects that require the support of CLS staff should consult with the CLS Director on their plans.
Faculty Travel Grants
The CLS makes available a limited number of conference travel grants for language lectors of all ranks to present papers at conferences. Funding may be used to cover registration, travel, lodging, and meals up to the amount awarded. Funded activities must relate directly to the language teaching profession and cannot be used for research outside the discipline of language acquisition.
The total award will be based on the budget justification submitted and may not in all cases cover the entire cost of the trip. Not every request may be granted due to budget limitations, and we encourage faculty to submit their requests as early as possible. Grants are only awarded to those presenting papers, facilitating workshops, or organizing events on a regional or national level. Each faculty member will be limited to a single award during each academic year. (Please note that the FAS Dean’s Office also makes available Instructional Faculty Conference Travel Grants of up to $500. For information, please contact Jason Zentz, Assistant Dean of Academic and Faculty Affairs Faculty of Arts and Sciences at jason.zentz@yale.edu). More information...
