Our Programs

The CLS offers a variety of specialized programs that supplement and extend the work done in Yale's language departments.

Our programs aimed at language for professional uses (the courses under the English Language Program and the Language for Special Purposes Program) include the study of English for international graduate students and the study of Spanish, Portuguese, or Chinese for those doing professional work in the target language. We supplement the teaching of languages in Yale College through the language tutoring program, which is available to any undergraduate enrolled in a language course. And we help students to diversify and extend their language study through two programs for independent study. DILS allows students to study a language not taught in a department at Yale and the Fields Program allows advanced language learners to study a particular field in the target language.

In collaboration with the MacMillan Center, the Office of New Haven Affairs, and the New Haven Public Schools World Languages Program, the CLS also offers the World Culture and Language After School Studies Program (World CLASS), providing high school students from New Haven and surrounding towns with instruction in a unique set of less-commonly taught languages and cultures.
