12:45pm | CLS Brown Bag: "Crafting a learner-centered course syllabus: A design approach" - Guest Speaker: Beatrice Dupuy (Univ. of Arizona) |
The syllabus is one of the most ubiquitous classroom artifacts. While its content is in part constrained by institutional policies and departmental expectations, it remains that as instructors we can choose how we frame the content and organization of our course, communicate to our students our teaching philosophy and our pedagogy, and set the tone for the entire term. Making our classroom inviting for ALL students starts with the syllabus. In this interactive presentation, we will examine ways in which we can transform our syllabus from content- to learner-centered by adopting a design approach. You will learn about a 7 principle-based framework you can use for your syllabus and course (re)design, analyze a syllabus of your choice through the lens of this framework, and consider ways in which you would apply these principles to your course and syllabus going forward.
Beatrice Dupuy is Professor of French, Public and Applied Humanities, and Second Language Acquisition and Teaching at the University of Arizona. She is co-director of the Center for Educational Resources in Culture, Language, and Literacy, a Language Resource Centers (LRC). Her research focuses on multiliteracies-based approaches to teaching and learning and teacher professional learning and has appeared in many journals and edited books. Her more recent book-length and special volume projects include Intercultural Communicative Competence and Mobility: Perspective on Virtual, Physical, and Critical Dimensions (Castledown, 2021), co-edited with Chantelle Warner; Language Learning and Professionalization in Higher Education: Pathways to Preparing Learners and Teachers in/for the 21st Century (Research Publishing, 2020) co-edited with Muriel Grosbois; Pathways to Paradigm Change: A Critical Examination of Prevailing Discourses and Ideologies in Foreign Language Education (Heinle Cengage, 2019) co-edited with Kristen Michelson; and A Multiliteracies Framework for Collegiate Foreign Language Teaching (Pearson Higher Education, 2016) co-authored with Heather Willis Allen and Kate Paesani.
