Title: A cognitive-based model of language that helps us understand how languages are learned
Abstract: In this talk I will present a model that captures the main insights from contemporary linguistic and psycholinguistic research regarding how the mind "does" language. The model rests on a larger memory system that connects the processes that allow the slow, arduous, incremental building of a knowledge base for a language to the fast context-dependent processes of real-time linguistic communication. Both kinds of processes are necessary for language learning, not only for a first language in children, but also for a second-language, classroom-based young adult. The talk ends with a brief discussion regarding some pedagogical implications from the model
