Why are sociolinguists increasingly interested in the visibility of languages on shop signs, billboards, public transportation, and other public spaces around the world? How can this multilingual “linguistic landscape” serve as a powerful resource for language teachers and learners today? Dave Malinowski, of the Yale Center for Language Study, will draw on his own experience teaching a linguistic landscape seminar, as well as examples from sites of linguistic diversity and struggle worldwide, to:
•Show how the interpretation and design of signs in the material world can enhance students’ linguistic, pragmatic, intercultural, and symbolic competence;
•Give practical ideas for learning activities in and out of the language classroom;
•Suggest new forms of classroom to community understanding and collaboration.
