Event description:
For the visit at the Music Library, we are planning:
- to have a brief discussion of music as a reflection of culture;
- an overview of the library’s collections, both general and special;
- how musicians and musicologists might approach a piece of music; and
- types of writing about music that might serve as examples, either in form or in approach.
We plan to have examples from each area of the collections:
- recordings and video, both physical and streaming;
- Music Special Collections: manuscripts and rare editions;
- The music collections include “classical” or art music, popular music, and folk music from around the world, and from many periods in history. Songs in many languages are represented.
- Historical Sound Recordings: recordings from the earliest days to the present;
- Oral History of American Music: interviews with composers.
- Special groups of interviews concern Charles Ives, Duke Ellington, the Steinway Company, and Paul Hindemith. We can bring a couple of rare/manuscript examples, and will play selections from interviews or recordings.
As music is so central to culture, any piece of music could form the starting point for a discussion, conversation, or written exercise.
Limited space for this event and RSVP is required to attend.
