For Faculty Seeking Tutoring for a Student

First, a brief review of the CLS Tutoring Program:

  • Eligibility for Tutoring: Foreign language tutoring is no longer just remedial, with eligibility restricted to students who are likely to earn a course grade of “C” or below. Tutoring is now available to any of your students who desire to improve their language proficiency level.
  • Selection Process: The CLS Tutoring Program still requires all students to inform their instructors whenever they request tutoring. Students who are interested in tutoring must complete a Request for Tutoring form online so that their eligibility can be verified by the tutoring program coordinator and the language teacher. The tutoring program coordinator will then select a tutor that appears to meet  the expectations of the student and any suggestions of the instructor. Once both parties agree to the arrangement, they can schedule their tutoring sessions to begin. The tutoring program coordinator continues to monitor the tutoring process and receives weekly progress reports that are made available to instructors and residential college deans.
  • All tutors are advised to communicate with a student's instructor at the outset of tutoring to gain valuable input, and possibly copies of study aids and exercises, so as to make the most of the tutoring sessions.

Next, here is what you can do to assist us.

  • The CLS invites you to work with us in promoting the CLS Tutoring Program to your students. We believe that peer-to-peer tutoring can be of great benefit to language learners.
  • In order to expedite the process, please feel free to send an email to the tutoring program coordinator (howard.barnaby@yale.edu) identifying students to whom you have recommended tutoring, particularly where such tutoring is remedial in nature. You as the instructor will have the first indication that a student is in need of tutoring, perhaps seeing this need even before the student does. While most students function well within the tutoring system, each semester there have been some students who for whatever reason fail to avail themselves of this service. Given how quickly a thirteen-week term passes, together with the intensity and time-demands of language courses, students can fall behind all too quickly. We want to reach these students before their situation becomes irretrievable.
  • Upon receipt of your email identifying students to whom you have recommended tutoring, the tutoring program coordinator will in turn send an email inviting each student to visit the CLS Tutoring website and submit a Request for Tutoring. The student will immediately be approved for tutoring, with your initial email serving as approval of the tutoring request. Elimination of the additional step of obtaining instructor approval will enable the student to begin tutoring as soon as possible. Your early email will thus allow the CLS to become an active partner in the tutoring process at the earliest possible date, thereby maximizing the efficacy of the tutoring program to all language students.
We welcome your input and comments as to how you think the tutoring program is working, as well as any suggestions you may have for improving the program. We share a common goal in providing language students with access to all avenues of learning, including, where desired, peer tutoring.

The CLS offers non-linear digital video editing equipment and support for faculty and students.

Oral testing software collects students' spoken responses to test questions for later review by instructors.
