For Tutors and Prospective Tutors

CLS Tutors

CLS Tutors are Yale students who are screened, hired, and trained by the Center for Language Study to tutor undergraduates enrolled in language courses. After reading the Guidelines for CLS Tutors, prospective tutors can submit an Offer to Tutor form. It is the goal of the tutoring program coordinator to match you with a student's particular needs and individual learning style. As a result, you should make sure to complete the "Additional Information" section of the Offer to Tutor with details as to your background, such as whether you are a native speaker, whether you have lived or studied abroad, or whether you have taken language courses at Yale. You should also provide information as to your prior tutoring experience, as well as an explanation of your approach to tutoring. Such input from you will help to optimize the selection process.

CLS Tutors can go to Manage Your Offers to Tutor in order to edit the content of your Offer to Tutor. CLS Tutors who have begun tutoring will need to submit a Progress Report (after each tutoring session) and submit a Timesheet (at the end of each week of tutoring).

Open Exchange Tutors

In contrast to the CLS Tutors described above, Open Exchange Tutors may offer private services to any member of the Yale Community through the Open Exchange system.

If you are a CLS Tutor, you are not required to offer your services on the Open Exchange system, although there could be certain advantages in doing so:
  • You will be offering your tutoring services to a wider audience. Students who do not meet the requirements for free tutoring by CLS Tutors (such as graduate students or any undergraduate student not enrolled in a language course) might seek a private tutoring arrangement on the Open Exchange. Any members of the Yale community with a Net ID can look to the Open Exchange for their tutoring needs.
  • Since Open Exchange tutoring is a private transaction between tutor and tutee, you may be able to negotiate a higher fee that better reflects your tutoring skills as well as your preparation time for tutoring sessions.
  • Open Exchange tutoring may allow you to continue your tutoring services beyond the academic year. The Yale Summer Session offers a variety of language courses throughout the summer. Given the intensity of these courses, students may find the need for a tutor. If you are going to be in the New Haven vicinity during the summer, you may want to offer your services as an Open Exchange tutor. On the other hand, if you post on the Open Exchange during the academic year and do not plan on being here over the summer, please remember to inactivate your posting during the summer months and reactivate it upon your return in the fall.

Oral testing software collects students' spoken responses to test questions for later review by instructors.

The CLS offers non-linear digital video editing equipment and support for faculty and students.
